4 Tips to Push Past Writers Block

Recently I found myself in the midst of a serious case of writers block. I was trying to write some content for a new Web site and rather than the text being short, punchy, and valuable I found myself droning on and on, paragraph after paragraph. It felt more like a 10th grade yawn-fest history report than engaging sales copy.

Rather than continue to beat my head against the wall, I fell back on some techniques I had once learned about how to move beyond writers block in order to get the creative juices flowing again.

1. GET MOVING

  • Run, jump, skip, or hop -  get your heart rate up and your blood flowing.
  • Schedule in a morning swim or an afternoon bike ride into your daily routine to clear your mind and release your energy.
  • Don’t have time to leave your office? Take some deep breaths and spend five minutes stretching. You’ll be amazed at what a few minutes can do.

2. PLAY

  • Throw some darts, shoot some pool, or score some air-hockey time. There is a reason a lot of creative agencies have games in their office, it can help improve creativity and performance.
  • Lucky enough to have an office pup? Play a rousing game of tug of war or fetch. It’s proven that offices with pets have happier, healthier, more creative employees.

3. CREATE

  • If you’re creative juices are stuck in one area, trying being creative in another. Go outside and take some pictures or doodle a masterpiece on some scrap paper.
  • Surround yourself with things you find creative whether it be photos, pottery, art, books, Web sites etc. Use these as inspiration points to help you get unstuck.

4. FUEL UP

  • Your brain makes up about 2% of your body weight but eats up 20% of your energy. You must feed it the right foods in order to make it thrive and perform the way you want it to.
  • Stock up on healthy, brain enhancing foods to keep you going.
  • Drink plenty of water. Most Americans are vastly dehydrated on a daily basis. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
