Online Video Usage at All Time High

A whopping 78.5% of U.S. Internet users watch video online in December, according to comScore. This number soared 13% up from the previous month. 14.3 billion videos were viewed, making December a record setting month.

Google’s video market share (think YouTube) also continues to grow. The videos on their sites currently account for 41% of all viewing.

While Google is easily the front runner when it comes to video, it’s worth noting the recent surge of Hulu.com. Hulu came from nowhere in 2007, to 6th in 2008. What’s also interesting about Hulu is that the average duration of video viewed on their site was 10.1 minutes, which is longer than any other other top video sites. Overall, the average duration of an online video is 3.2 minutes.

 

Statistics like this are evidence that people are looking to video for not only entertainment, but for informational purposes as well. Businesses are utilizing video at record rates to communicate with their employees and customers.

 

Companies with video on their sites have an instant advantage over their competitors. These companies are giving consumers what they want (information), in the form they want it (video), when they want it (to consume at their leisure).
